Technology-enhanced learning
At my school site in Paramount Unified School District, many teachers are very uncomfortable with the use of technology in their classrooms. Most teachers only use technology when they are required to do so by administration, such as registering attendance online, completing Report Cards, and sending emails.
Recently, our school district has adopted Microsoft Office so that teachers can use the tools provided for planning and teaching purposes. Many teachers, however, are not familiar with the basic functions of Microsoft Office, such as PowerPoint and Excel. The principal at my school site asked me to provide teachers with technology workshops so that they could become familiar with the basic uses of PowerPoint and Excel, as well as other available online tools. I was also asked to demonstrate how these tools can be used for planning and teaching.
I conducted two after-school technology workshops for teachers in the school's computer lab. The first workshop was on how to use the basic features of Excel and how it can be used as a Grade Book to keep track of student scores. The second workshop was on using PowerPoint to create a presentation on any subject area. After each presentation, teachers had the opportunity for hands-on practice using the technology. I also provided teachers with samples of how it can be applied to their teaching practice.
Teachers were also provided with two "How-to-Guides" and short explanations on creating online assessments using two online resources, INSPECT and EdCite. I introduced the assessment tools during a staff meeting in which the focus of the meeting was getting students prepared for the end of year state assessment. (SLO b, c, d)
