Reflection:
While completing the Masters in Educational Technology, I had the opportunity to take ETEC 525 as a study abroad course in Costa Rica. During the trip, I was able to see how a different culture integrates educational technology. We participated in a symposium and a gallery walk in which students at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica presented their technology projects. I also had the opportunity to visit a pre-school class. I was amazed to see that students at such a young age, some as young as 3 years old, were already being exposed to technology. One of the artifacts, is a PowerPoint presentation and a reflection of my experiences while on the trip. While on the trip to Costa Rica, I noticed that teenagers are very similar to teenagers here in the United States. Use of social media is a global issue so it is important to research its impact on today’s youth. The second artifact, is a research paper on the effects of social media on teenagers. I found that, although social media has benefits, there are also many dangers that educators must be aware of to protect students.

This group presentation discusses steps required to effectively implement a BYOD model into an educational institution. Things such as acceptable use policy and equitable access are discussed in this presentation. |
Artifact 2: Staff Development Technology Plan
Expected SLO: Plan for implementing technologies/media in an organization. This document is a one year plan for staff development opportunities in the implementation of technological tools in the classroom. The plan includes stakeholder responsibilities, learning objectives/goals, a timeline of completion, learning activities, and budget information. |
Reflection:
The leadership course gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into the responsibilities of implementation of technology in education. The first artifact included for this SLO is a collaborative presentation of the Bring Your Own Device, BYOD, model of technology implementation. In planning this presentation, I learned about creating a school vision that involves all stakeholders, developing an effective acceptable use policy (AUP), and considering the benefits as well as the drawbacks of such a model. In this course, I also had the opportunity to create a one-year staff development plan for technology integration. Both of these artifacts were great learning experiences because I was able to apply the leaderships skills taught throughout the course. It helped me see first hand how much is required to successfully implement technology and that it is not a simple and quick process. Being a great leader requires communication and collaboration with all stakeholders involved, a shared vision, and personal and spiritual growth.

ETEC 523: Information and Digital Literacies
|
Reflection:
This course focused on information and digital literacy. The first artifact focuses on the importance of digital citizenship. I chose to create an audio file that informed students of what it means to be a digital citizen, why it is important, and some of the dangers that may exist on the internet. Informing students of the importance of digital citizenship at an early age will raise awareness and teach them responsibility. The second artifact I created is a Webquest. It requires students to use online resources to complete an investigation about an animal that may be found in the city. This artifact requires students to think critically as they analyze information literacies. Prior to this course, I gave this assignment as a paper and pencil activity. I provided students with text and had them create a poster to present their findings. Converting the assignment to an online Webquest allows students to use technologies in creative ways to enhance their learning.

Reflection:
In this course, I learned about many new education technology tools that are available for educators to use during daily instruction. I have never considered some of the tools we discussed as educational tools. For example, I had not thought about using blogs as educational tools in an elementary classroom. However, if used properly, most technological tools can be applied in education. The first artifact is an online quiz on Picasso. Online quiz technology tools are great resources for educators to assess and provide immediate feedback to students. I used Google Forms, which is free and easy to use. The internet provides many quiz software tools that allow educators to deliver content to students in a fun and engaging manner. The second artifact is a screencast tutorial for both teachers and students on the use of the free software “Little Bird Tales.” Providing step-by-step directions for technology tools can be helpful to those who find it intimidating.

Artifact 1: African American Collection Development
Expected SLO: Evaluate and recommend a wide range of children’s, young adult, adult, professional literature and informational text in diverse formats and languages. This is an annotated bibliography of recommended African American children’s realistic fiction books. |
Reflection:
I took this course as an elective course. I am glad I did because it reminded me of my love of reading. The best part of this course was that I was able to read books from a wide range of genres. It allowed me to choose books that I may not have read on my own. It also helped me be aware of what youth are currently reading. This course also gave me the opportunity to think critically about literature selection for a school library. Librarians must consider the student population, as well as a wide selection of genres and topics. The first artifact I included is a collection development of African American children’s realistic fiction literature. This assignment proved to be challenging task because I had to consider the target audience, budget, genre, and media source. The second artifact is a graphic novel on the author J.K. Rowling, which I created using the software program Comic Life. This is an assignment that I would love to use with students, who usually dread writing biographies because they tend to consists of five paragraph essays. It was fun creating a biography using Comic Life because it allowed for creativity.
