Teaching and Learning
During the field work experience, the teacher librarian and I noticed that students did not know how to select websites that were appropriate and effective for conducting research. The teacher librarian had previously taught a lesson describing the five components of website evaluation. In order to ensure that students understood website evaluation, I decided to teach a lesson that would build on what students had learned in the previous lesson with the teacher librarian.
I conducted my lesson with a class of fifth grade students at Signal Hill Elementary School. The lesson I taught focused on using the five components of website evaluation to rate existing websites. The goal of the lesson was for students to identify good websites from bad websites based on authority, currency, purpose, audience, and structure. I provided students with two websites for them to evaluate. Their task was to collaborate in a small group and decide if the website is a good site based on the information from the PowerPoint Presentation. (SLO a, e)
