Program administration
During my field experience, I was part of a couple teams that dealt directly with Curriculum Development . The 2014-2015 school year was the last year of using Open Court as the English Language Arts program in the Paramount Unified School District. I was chosen to be part of the new Language Arts Adoption Committee. As part of the team, I participated in a few meetings in which we did the following:
-Reviewed 4 options for a new program
-Previewed materials for each program
-Collaborated with other teachers and discussed pros and cons of each program
-Came to a consensus on a district-wide English Language Arts program adoption
After coming to a consensus, the district decided to adopt the program Wonders by publisher McGrawHill to replace Open Court. The adoption of a new English Language Arts program meant that new Curriculum Pacing Guides had to be created. Therefore, a Curriculum and Development Team (CADT) was created. The team consisted of district Curriculum Specialists, language arts Instructional coaches, and classroom teachers. Within the team, there were sub-groups, one for each grade level. As an Instructional Coach, I became a part of the CADT team, specifically focusing on developing the curriculum guides in language arts for third grade.
The CADT team met for one week during the 2016 summer break in order to create the language arts Curriculum Guides using the new adopted program, Wonders. We worked on the following:
